Spining is a process of flexing a golf shaft between three, free-spinning bearings (works on both steel and graphite). This allows the shaft to reveal (on a consistent basis) where it bends each time when loaded in the golf swing. This is a very predictable position; the shaft will flex and rebound from the flexed position in the same direction every time. This position is the neutral bend position (NBP) and the shaft will resist moving from this location when flexed. The orientation of this position to the head of the club is the foundation of club building. Changing this flex characteristic of the shaft is impossible: Do not fight Mother Nature! Let us take advantage of what she gives us. The benefits of spining include dramatic imporvement in solid impact with the ball and enhancing accuracy, feel, and trajectory control. I have a single digit handicap and after each round, I thought about my round of golf. The things that I remembered the most were the three or four solid shots that I hit. After spining my clubs, I now think about the nine to ten solid shots. There is no greater feeling than flushing a three iron. I am convinced that spining your shaft will double or triple your pleasure from a round of golf. To my knowledge, no original club manufacturer is spining shafts. Therefore, there is a 99% chance that your game would benefit from spine aligning. A custom clubmaker or an individual who has purchased the tool only does this process. If you do not feel like you can master the process of spining your shaft, contact your local clubmaker and ask him about spining. If that clubmaker is not currently spining shafts, email me at jb@ClubmakersChoice.Com and I will explain the process and make a tool available to him to spine your shaft. Double your pleasure ... and get those shafts spined!
I originally tried PVC pipe, with limited success. When clamping the tool (made with PVC pipe) in a vise, it deformed and altered the alignment of the bearings. In addition, there was dimensional change with temperature change. The PVC pipe was not rigid enough.
I created the body of my Spine Tool from drawn-over-mandrel, the best heavy wall tubing (same as used by NASCAR). I configured the length of the tool to that of the average male grip length. I machine the ends of my tool and the inside diameter is turned in a lathe. This creates perfect alignment for the bearings . I weld a flange on the tool (both sides), making it easy to secure in a vise. You can drill the flange also if you want to mount the tool permanently. The bearings (.625 inside diameter) are sealed on both sides in order to prevent dust and dirt from entering. This also eliminates the need for any future lubrication. Be aware that shielded bearings do not make contact with the internal race of the bearing, like the sealed bearings do. This allows dust and shop dirt to enter the bearing. You can identify a shielded bearing by its metal shield between the internal and external race of the bearing. I modified the bearings to eliminate surface tension. This is a critical part of the process to ensure that the shaft comes back to the same place each time it is flexed. This also minimizes the amount of pressure that needs to be applied when spining 50 gram graphite shafts. After inserting the shaft butt into the body of the tool and the tip of the shaft into the third bearing, I then applied a small amount of flex to the shaft. This causes the shaft to snap to the neutral position in less then one second. It has taken me up to fifteen minutes on a $400.00 Golfsmith Golf Frequency Analysis Machine to find this same neutral position. The tool is now capable of locating the neutral position and spine without removing the head, only the grip! This works great when you just want to check a club's shaft alignment. On the other hand, you may have a favorite club that really fits your swing. By using this tool, you now have the capability to align the rest of your clubs to your favorite club orientation. This tool will last a lifetime and is a club maker's dream! The Spine Tool will enlighten you on one of the best-kept secrets in golf! Systematic instructions are included with the tool and phone support is available after the sale within the United States. Just email your phone number and I will call and walk you through the process of spining over the phone.
If you are a clubmaker, my Spine Tool offers tremendous profit potential by showing your customers how their clubs are misaligned. When your customer brings his clubs in to be re-gripped, it will take you about 5 seconds to put the ungripped club into the tool and show him how misaligned his clubs really are. I have never met a customer who did not want to hit straighter shots!
Some Fujikura, Proforce, A J Tech, and others have a butt diameter larger than .625. If you work with shafts that are larger than .625, you should consider upgrading to JB's Spine Finder Pro.
